No. 7 Simpson Softball wins Day One in the battle of the Red Hawks on Senior Day

REDDING, Calif.- The Red Hawks returned home on Saturday when they hosted Benedictine University at Mesa. It was senior day for the Red Hawks as they honored their four seniors; Taylor Hill, Marisa Marmolejo, Carlye Avey and Kara Wall, participating in their last home regular season game. It would be a good senior day for the Red Hawks as they handed Benedictine two losses, 5-4 and 9-2.

In game one with Carlye Avey pitching the Red Hawks would jump out to a early lead in the second inning when Marissa Marmolejo would double to deep left field to score Kristin Beckman.

Benedictine would answer back in the fourth inning scoring four times on three hits to take a 4-1 lead. The Red Hawks would start to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth then Rachel Last scored on a Taylor Hill ground out to make it 4-2.

The Red Hawks would tie the game back up at 4 in the sixth inning when Marmolejo's Sac Fly scored Kristin Beckman and then Missy Silveira singled to score Kara Wall. 

The Red Hawks would win the game in walk off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning when Courtney Thomas doubled to lead off the inning then Rachel Esse would single to short to score Thomas for the 5-4 win.

Avey gets the win throwing a complete game allowing 4 runs on 4 hits. Marmolejo was 1-1 with  2 RBI and a walk. Beckman was 2-4 with 2 runs scored.

In game two it was Benedictine who jumped out early to take a two run advantage in the first inning on Red Hawk starter Heidi Sundquist. The Red Hawks would rebound in the third inning scoring three times when Courtney Thomas homered with Kaylana Mah and Madison Wright on base.

They would add another run in the fourth inning when Rachel Esse Sac Bunt brought Amanda Laughlin in to score.

Then the Red Hawks would pull away comfortably scoring five more times in the sixth inning on a 2 RBI Rachel Esse single, a wild pitch to score Last and a Madison Wright double to score Powers and Mah.

Paris Hallums earned the win in relief going 4.1 innings not allowing a hit.

Esse was 1-2 with 3 RBI with Thomas also adding 3 RBI in the win.

The Red Hawks finish the series vs. Benedictine on Sunday, April 24th, with a double header starting at 9am out at Big League Dreams.
