ESCONDIDO, Calif. - The boys swept the first day of the three-game series against Saint Katherine University as they won 6-4 and 10-9.
Simpson now extends its win streak to a season-high seven games with a perfect 5-0 record to begin conference play.
The Red Hawks drew first blood in the first inning as a one-out
Logan Gomes single came around to score on an error by the Firebird's first baseman.
Simpson went up 2-0 in the second inning as
Micah Kele came around to score on a single to right field by
Jaxon Hotta.
Starter
Eric Winchester threw five innings of shutout baseball as he surrendered his first runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
Geremy McCollough came in relief in the bottom half of the sixth inning to relieve Winchester.
Winchester went 5.1 innings and allowed three runs while striking out nine Firebird batters.
Simpson tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to grab the 6-4 lead.
A Hotta walk came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Titus Sato in the seventh and a solo shot by
Micah Kele in the eighth extended Simpson's lead to 6-4.
Eddie Avalos came in relief of McCollough in the eighth inning and pitched two shutout innings.
Nathan Palacioz entered the ninth inning with a two-run lead and closed the door for his fourth save of the year.
Game 2:
The Firebirds struck first in game two as they scored three runs off starter
Garrett Brogdon.
Saint Katherine jumped on starter Brogdon as they chased the Simpson starter in the fifth inning with one out. Brogdon went 4.1 innings while giving up four runs while striking out seven batters.
Simpson scored its first run in the top of the eighth inning. But Saint Katherine put up four runs in the bottom half of the inning to pad its 8-1 lead.
The Red Hawks came roaring back in the top of the ninth inning as they batted around and scored nine runs off seven hits and two Firebird errors.
The wild ninth inning saw hits from
Kade Kupihea,
Logan Gomes,
Maximiliano Lopez,
Micah Kele,
Brady Meeds, and
Titus Sato.
Lopez hit a three-run shot to make it an 8-5 game. Followed by a Gomes three-run blast to give Simpson its first lead of the game 10-8.
The Firebirds did not go quietly as they scored one run and left the tying and game-winning runs on base.
Nathan Palacioz picked up his second save of the day and his fifth of the year to give Simpson the 10-9 victory.
The Simpson bats pounded out 10 hits and were led by two-hit performances by
Logan Gomes,
Maximiliano Lopez, and
Titus Sato.
Lopez and Gomes combined for two home runs and seven RBIs.
Kade Kupihea,
Micah Kele,
Brady Meeds, and
Chase Rossman rounded out the Red Hawks offense with single-hit games.
With the win, Simpson is currently in first place in the Cal Pac standings as they ride a seven-game win streak.
Simpson looks for its second consecutive series sweep tomorrow as the first pitch is scheduled for 2 PM.
