Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif. - The baseball team took on D2 opponent Cal State University Eastbay today in a doubleheader in Hayward, CA.
The Red Hawks fell short in Game One against the Pioneers 5-1 behind starting pitcher
Eric Winchester.
An intense pitching duel between these two teams aces set up a thrilling game one of the three-game series.
Winchester cruised through the first five innings of work as he allowed just three base runners and struck out five Pioneers.
The Red Hawks scratched across the first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning to grab the 1-0 lead.
A one-out single by
Dominic Folks followed by a Pioneer error set up a one-out first and third situation.
Titus Sato platted the first run of the game on a safety squeeze that scored Folks from third.
However, the lead did not last long as the Pioneers answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on three hits and one Simpson error.
A two-run bomb by Eastbay highlighted the three-run inning.
Geremy McCollough came in relief on Winchester in the top of the seventh inning.
Winchesters' final line included a quality start that lasted 6.0 innings while allowing three runs and punching out seven batters.
The Pioneers added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to grab the 5-1 lead.
Simpson put some traffic aboard the final three frames but were unable to plate any runs as they left five runners on base.
Winchester pitched well but ultimately earned the tough loss in game one.
Maximiliano Lopez led the Red Hawk bats in game one with two hits in four trips to the plate.
Kade Kupihea,
Dominic Folks, and Andreyes Palacious rounded out the Simpson offense with one hit each.
Game 2:
The Red Hawks handed the ball to
Jaydon Tomas in game two of the twin-bill.
Tomas lasted two innings while giving up one unearned run on one hit before
Eddie Avalos came in relief in the third inning.
The Pioneers scratched across a run in the next two frames to take the 3-0 lead.
With time running out and only six outs left, the Red Hawks came roaring back in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 3-3.
Four straight hits to open the inning set the tone for Simpson. Back-to-back singles by
Kade Kupihea and
Logan Gomes put early traffic aboard for Simpson.
Dominic Folks drove home the first run of the game for Simpson on an RBI single that scored Kupihea.
Maximiliano Lopez continued to stay hot as he doubled into the right-center alley to score Gomes and Folks to tie the game at three.
The Simpson bullpen locked down the Pioneer's offense as they threw five innings of shutout ball with the combined efforts of
Dalton Alford,
Brendan Moore,
Chad Horton,
Geremy McCollough, and
Nathan Palacioz.
Simpson broke the 3-3 tie in the top of the tenth inning.
Micah Kele's leadoff single followed by a
Brady Meeds sacrifice bunt put the go-ahead run in scoring position with just one out.
Jaxon Hotta picked up his third hit of the game with a clutch single into right field that allowed Kele to score from second on an error by the Pioneer's right fielder.
Palacioz picked up the save by retiring the Pioneers in order in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Also, McCollough picked up his first win of the year as he went 0.2 innings while stranding the winning run at third base.
The Simpson offense pounded out nine hits with
Jaxon Hotta leading the charge with three hits in four trips to the plate.
Maximiliano Lopez followed close behind with two hits to give himself four hits on the day.
Kupihea, Gomes, Folks, and Kele rounded out the Red Hawks offense with one hit a piece.
Simpson looks to take the series tomorrow in the rubber match game that is set for 2 PM first pitch.
