Simpson Splits Doubleheader with Warriors

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson softball team split a pair of games Tuesday afternoon with William Jessup at the SU Softball Field. Jessup came from behind to win the opener, 8-5, while the Red Hawks bounced back in the finale, 5-2, to improve to 14-2 on the season.

Game 1 - WJU 8, SU 5
Simpson stormed to a 4-1 lead behind a pair of two-run homers. Kristin Beckman gave SU a 2-0 lead in the second with her first big fly of the season, and Bailey Akins his her second of the season in the third inning to push the Red Hawk lead to 4-1.

The Warriors, however, battled back with two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth to tie the game at four apiece. Clarissa Blaquera's grand slam home run proved to be the difference in the top of the seventh.

Simpson rallied in the bottom of the seventh for a run and would have brought the go-ahead run to the plate with the bases loaded, but Taylor Hill was tagged out trying to score a run after Akins' infield single with two outs.

Game 2 - SU 5, WJU 2
Madison Wright doubled home three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cap a four-run inning and help the Red Hawks avoid the sweep. Paris Hallums pitched a complete game allowing two runs on six hits. Courtney Thomas was 1-3 with an RBI as seven different Red Hawks recorded base hits.

Missy Silveira's bunt single to open the fifth set the table for the Simpson rally. Kaylana Mah followed with a single to right field, and Jacycie Bruno's bunt single loaded the bases. After Thomas tied the game with a hit-by-pitch RBI, Wright knocked in the three decisive runs with a line drive into the left-centerfield gap.

Simpson plays host Friday to No. 3 Oregon Tech with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
