Red Hawks Move Into a Tie for Second Place in Cal-Pac

REDDING, Calif. - Paced by Josh Delamarter's career high 28 points, the Simpson men's basketball team picked up a timely win Thursday night and moved into a tie for second place in the Cal-Pac Conference standings with a huge second half and a 73-61 victory over UC Merced.

Trailing 31-28 at the half, Simpson opened the second half with a decisive 10-0 run over a 90-second stretch and never were seriously threatened throughout the final 20 minutes. The Red Hawks built the lead to as many as 17 points midway through the final half before settling for the 12-point victory, which completed the season sweep over the Bobcats.

Jacob Kaler added 12 points as the Red Hawks saw eight players score at least five points on the night. Marc Kirkland set a career best with seven steals and also dished out a team-high four assists. The defense forced 22 Merced turnovers and converted those into 25 points on the offensive end.

With the win, the Red Hawks move into a tie with LaSierra at 5-4 in the conference, two games behind Cal Maritime, who visits the Heritage Center on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
