LAWRENCEVILLE, Geor. - The Simpson softball team began the CAC conference tournament today against Florida National in the second game of the day.
Before the game six Red Hawks were honored for the All-Conference accolades;
Brianna Lopez-Cortez,
Kassandra Soria,
Jacquelyn Lujan,
Nicolena Holen,
Madyson Welch, and
Hollee Jamison.
The game remained scoreless until Simpson drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning as a leadoff walk to
Morgynn Wylie followed by back-to-back hits by
Jessica Heck and
Jordan Adami loaded the bases for the top of the Red Hawks lineup.
A single into center field by Holen gave Simpson the early lead followed by a RBI groundout by Soria and a huge two-out two-run single into left field by Lopez-Cortez.
However, the Conquistadors answered back in the top of the fourth inning as they plated seven runs off seven hits as they got into Simpson's bullpen and took the 7-4 lead.
They added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning as they plated three more runs to take the commanding 10-4 lead.
Simpson got one run back in the bottom half of the inning as they took advantage of two Conquistador errors to cut the lead in half 10-5.
But the Red Hawks offense could not overcome the five-run deficit as they fell 10-5 to set up a West Coast showdown tomorrow against Westcliff at 2:30 PM (EST) in an elimination game.
Holen, Lopez-Cortez, and Heck each posted two-hit performances as they combined for three RBIs.
