ESCONDIDO, Calif. - The Red Hawks took on the Firebirds in the postponed game from March 2nd in a nightcap game tonight.
Eric Winchester earned the start and took the ball for Simpson in the midweek conference matchup.
Back-to-back singles to open the game by
Kade Kupihea and
Logan Gomes put early traffic aboard for Simpson.
A sacrifice fly by
Micah Kele that plated Kupihea gave Simpson the early 1-0 lead.
The Red Hawks padded its 1-0 lead by adding two more runs in the second inning on RBI singles by
Dylan Leek and
Logan Gomes.
Winchester went two innings before giving way to Simpson's bullpen as
Garrett Brogdon followed with two innings of his own.
Winchester and Brogdon combined for four innings and one run while striking out five batters.
But USK got to Simpson reliever Geremey McCollogh as he surrendered two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 5-3 ball game.
Simpson got one run back in the following inning on a solo shot by
Logan Gomes to push his season total to double digits.
The Firebirds got things going in the bottom of the seventh inning as they scratched one run across on an RBI single.
However, the game ended in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and runners on the corners because of darkness.
Because there are no halted games in the conference, the Red Hawks took the 6-3 victory in six innings.
Simpson scattered eight hits while scoring six runs.
Logan Gomes led the charge with a three-hit performance that included his 10th long ball of the season.
Kade Kupihea and
Dominic Folks each recorded two-hit games as they combined for three runs.
Simpson looks to continue play tomorrow in Socal as they take on Vanguard at 2:30 PM.
