COSTA MESA, Ariz. - The boys continued their SoCal road trip today as they took on GSAC opponent Vanguard Lions in Costa Mesa, CA.
Simpson jumped out to the early lead on a solo shot by
Maximiliano Lopez in the first inning. This is Lopez's fifth homer of the year and second on the team behind
Logan Gomes.
But the Lions jumped on starter
Brady Glenn as a three-run home run gave the Lions the 3-1 lead.
The Red Hawks chipped away and plated one run in the second inning when a one-out walk to
Brady Meeds came around to score on a double by
Dylan Leek.
Dalton Alford came in relief of Glenn after one inning and pitched a scoreless inning before freshman
Gavin Hughes got the ball out of the Red Hawks bullpen.
Hughes ran into some trouble in the fourth inning as he surrendered four runs to make it a 7-2 ball game.
Some two-out magic in the fifth inning helped Simpson cut into the 7-2 Lions lead with a two-out walk followed by a single by
Micah Kele but traffic aboard.
Alex Tolbert had the clutch two-out RBI single to score Lopez and make it a 7-3 game after four and a half innings.
The Lions added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on two hits and one error to extend its lead to 9-3.
The Lion's pitching staff held the Red Hawk bats in check for the rest of the way as they allowed no runs and no hits.
Simpson scattered five hits and three runs against the Vanguard Lions who are currently receiving votes in the latest coaches poll rankings. .
Simpson continues its road trip and looks to bounce back against Westcliff on Friday in a doubleheader that is slated to start at 11 AM.
