REDDING, Calif. - The boys looked to win the series today as they took on first-place Embry-Riddle Eagles.
Game one of the day featured reigning Cal Pac pitcher of the week
Garrett Brogdon on the mound.
The Eagles got on the board first in the second inning on a two-run double to grab the early 2-0 lead.
Embry tacked on another run in the top of the fifth inning on a solo shot to pad its 3-0 lead.
But Simpson grabbed the lead on a huge misplay by the Eagles defense to grab the 5-2 lead.
A one-out walk to
Dylan Leek followed by a single by
Kade Kupihea and a
Logan Gomes walk loaded the bases for
Maximiliano Lopez.
A Lopez hit-by pitch plated the first run of the game. But the Eagles looked to escape the jam as they induced a popup on the edge of the infield grass with two outs.
However, an error by the Eagle's second baseman allowed two runs to cross the plate to tie the game 3-3.
Simpson took advantage of the error as they reloaded the bases and plated two more runs on a two-run single by
Titus Sato to grab the 5-3.
A two-run blast by
Andreyes Palacios highlighted a three-run sixth inning to pad Simpson's 8-4 lead.
The Eagles added one run in the seventh inning to chip away from the 8-4 deficit.
But the Red Hawks added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning highlighted by a solo shot by Lopez.
The Eagles made it interesting in the final frame as they plated three runs before
Geremy McCollough closed the door for his first save of the year.
Brogdon picked up the win as he tossed six innings while allowing four runs on five hits.
Lopez swung the hot stick in the first game as he went a perfect 4-4 with a solo blast.
Titus Sato followed Lopez with a three-hit performance and picked up two RBIs.
Game 2:
The Red Hawks looked to take the rubber match game behind starter
Jaydon Tomas.
The first three innings featured a tight pitcher's duel as both team's offenses were kept quiet and off the board.
Tomas ran into some trouble in the fourth inning as the Eagles threatened to strike first as they had a bases-loaded one-out opportunity.
But Tomas induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 twin killer to escape the inning unscathed.
Simpson carried the momentum and struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning when a one-out single by
Logan Gomes came around to score on a
Micah Kele RBI single.
The Eagles chased Tomas in the fifth inning as they plated three runs to grab the 3-1 lead.
The combined efforts of
Chad Horton,
Dalton Alford,
Geremy McCollough, and
Logan Boenker allowed just three hits and five total base runners over the next 4.2 innings.
However, the Red Hawks bats could not get it going as they were held to just one run as they scattered seven hits.
With the split on the day, Simpson is currently 8-3 in conference play as they are tied for second place with Benedictine and trail Embry-Riddle by just one game in the Cal Pac standings.
