Simpson Drops Opening Series to EOU

REDDING, Calif. - The baseball team continued its four-game series against the Mountaineers today in a doubleheader that began at 10 AM.

Jaydon Tomas was given the nod for the start in today's first game of the doubleheader.

The Mountaineers struck first in the second inning when they platted three runs off two hits and and one Red Hawk error.

But the Red Hawks answered back in the bottom half of the inning by pushing across three runs to tie the game at three.

An RBI double by former Oaks catcher Jaxon Hotta plated Andreyes Palacious to get Simpson on the board.

A Mountaineer error helped Dylan Leek get aboard and later steal a bag to put two runners in scoring position.

Dominic Folks continued to swing the hot stick as he had a clutch two-run single to tie the game at three.

Simpson and Eastern Oregon exchanged homers in the fourth inning as Alex Tolbert hit his second home run of the year to tie the game at four.

Dalton Alford came in relief in the fourth inning to close the book on Tomas.

Eastern Oregon and Simpson would exchange two runs each in the fourth inning to even the score, 6-6.

A Kade Kupihea double followed by a Jaxon Hotta walk helped set up a big inning for Simpson.

But an EOU error helped plate one run on an errant throw followed by another big RBI single by Folks.

Simpson grabbed its first lead of the game in the bottom half of the fifth when they platted two runs to go up 8-6 thanks to an Andreyes Palacious two-run bomb.

A single by Leek to open the sixth followed by an RBI triple by Logan Gomes pushed across the first run of the sixth inning. Tolbert pushed across the second run of the inning on an RBI single.

But the Red Hawks bats were silenced by the Mountaineers pitching.

EOU would tie the game in the eighth inning off four runs.

After a quiet bottom half, the Mountaineers would grab the one-run lead to begin the ninth.

The ninth began with two quick outs. But back-to-back walks put the tying and winning runs aboard. However, the Red Hawks were unable to plate the tying run and dropped the first game 11-10.

Folks recorded two hits and three RBIs, Tolbert registered two hits which included a solo home run, and Palacios added a two-run blast.

Game 2:

Nathan Palacioz got the nod in the series finale.

Dominic Folks started the game with a lead-off single followed by back-to-back walks by Logan Gomes and Alex Tolbert helped set up a sacrifice fly by Micah Kele to give Simpson the early lead.

Eastern Oregon rallied back in the third with three runs to pull in front 3-1.

Simpson chipped away in the fourth after Titus Sato reached base on an error followed by an Angel Cota double to begin the inning.

Keelan Yagi picked up his second hit of the day, on an RBI single to pull Simpson within one run.

However, the bats went quiet and the Mountaineers added insurance runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to win the game 8-2.

Folks and Yagi led the offense with two hits each.

Simpson will look to bounce back as they hit the road this weekend to take on Sonoma State.
