Red Hawks Sweep Southern Oregon to Open Season

REDDING, Calif. - The last time the Simpson softball team was on the field it was hoisting an NCCAA national championship trophy in Virginia last spring. The Red Hawks opened their 2016 season Friday like they never missed a beat from that championship run sweeping visiting Southern Oregon, 4-0 and 3-2, at the Simpson Softball Field.

Game One
Paris Hallums tossed a four-hit shutout, and Missy Silveira turned in one of the best defensive plays you will see to preserve at the time a 1-0 SU lead as the Red Hawks won the first game of the doubleheader, 4-0. Hallums struck out 12 Raider batters and got the defensive help she needed in the top of the fifth before the Red Hawk bats exploded in the bottom half of the same inning.

With Simpson holding on to a 1-0 lead with two outs and two SOU runners on base, Kelsey Randall drove a ball into the right-centerfield gap. Silveria's diving catch ended the inning and kept the Red Hawks in front. The offense added three runs in the bottom half to ice the victory. Madison Wright had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Amanda Laughlin, Kaylana Mah, and Courtney Thomas also recorded RBIs for Simpson. As a team, the Red Hawks had seven hits.

Game Two
Simpson came back after trailing 2-0 to win the nightcap in the bottom of the seventh inning when SOU's defensive miscue. The Red Hawks scored single runs in the second, third, and seventh after the Raiders staked themselves to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.

SU managed just three base hits with Thomas and Bailey Akins each driving in runs. Silveria had the only other base hit, a two-out single in the seventh and eventually scored the winning run. Caryle Avey recorded the win in the circle allowing seven hits, but just two earned runs. She struck out a pair and did not issue a walk.

Simpson continues its homestand Saturday in the first two of a four-game series with Eastern Oregon. First pitch is slated for noon.
