Red Hawks Open NAIA-West Play Against British Columbia

Redding, Calif.- The Red Hawks Men's Baseball team were in action on Saturday afternoon hosting the Thunderbirds from the University of British Columbia. The Red Hawks would be handed two more losses in the double header dropping game one 5-3 and the second game 9-4.

James Humphery took the mound in game one for the Red Hawks against Thunderbird started Alex Webb. The Thunderbirds would get to Humphey first scoring 3 runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. The Red Hawks would get one back in the 5th inning after Aaron Curfman doubled to right field and Blaine Hokama's RBI single put the Red Hawks on the board.

After one run innings by the Thunderbirds in the 6th and 7th inning the Red Hawks would get the bases loaded with no one out in the bottom of 8th and Casey Meyer would come out with a hit to score two runners and cut the lead to 5-3. Webb would settle down and strike out the side to end the Red Hawk attempt at a comeback and Thunderbird closer Ethan Skuija would slam the door shut sealing the 5-3 victory.

Humphey gets saddled with the loss allowing 3 runs on 5 hits in 4 innings of work. Aaron Curfman was the bright spot in the lineup going 4-4 at the dish with a run scored. Homaka added 2 hits with a RBI and a run scored in the losing effort.

Game two saw the Red Hawks send Robert Bristol to the mound against Curtis Taylor for the Thunderbirds. This time it was the Red Hawks jumping out to the early lead as the scored twice in the 1st inning when Cody Coggins scored on a Dylan Mumford single and Casey Meyer also scored in the inning.

The Thunderbirds would do the bulk of their damage in the 3rd inning when the chased Bristol from the game scoring seven times in the frame of four hits highlighted by a Bruce Yari 2 run home run. The lead would grow from 7-2 to 9-2 as the Thunderbirds scored one run in each of the 4th and 7th inning.

The Red Hawks wouldn't give up easy and would mount a minor rally in the 8th inning scoring twice on a Jarrett Kirby two run single scoring Cody Coggins and Rath Mosley. The rally would come up short again and the Red Hawks fell 9-4.

The Red Hawks will look to avenge these losses tomorrow (Feb. 28, 2016) as they will have two more chances to beat the Thunderbirds with a double header scheduled at 11am at Tiger Field.
