SU Remains Unbeaten, Tops Nationally-Ranked Corban at Day One of Simpson Invite

REDDING, Calif. - The SU softball team completed a perfect 3-0 day at day one of the Simpson Invitational on Friday at Big League Dreams. The trio of victories included a 2-1 win over No. 17 Corban in the nightcap of games. The Red Hawks needed just five innings to post 8-0 and 12-1 wins over Northwest Christian and Southern Oregon, respectively in the first two games of the day.

Game 1 - SU 8, NCU 0
Simpson's Caryle Avey threw a two-hit shutout, and the Red Hawks scored early and often with four runs in the first and three more in the second. Bailey Akins drove in three runs, including a double, and Madison Wright drove in a pair. Taylor Hill had two hits, and Kaylana Mah scored three times.

Game 2 - SU 12, SOU 1
Akins hammered a three-run home run in the first inning setting the tone for the Red Hawks to roll past Southern Oregon. She drove in six runs for the game. Mah added two hits and two RBI as well, including a double. Amy Rodriguez got the win inside the circle allowing five hits and one earned run.

Game 3 - SU 2, Corban 1
Simpson rallied to knock off the No. 17 team in the nation, Corban, 2-1. Wright's RBI single in the sixth plated the winning run. Simpson starter Paris Hallums gave up five hits and allowed a run, but was lifted after walking four and hitting a batter through 3.0 innings. Avey earned the victory in relief and was stellar giving up two hits with five strikeouts in 4.0 scoreless innings.

The Red Hawks play three more games Saturday with the first starting at 11:30 a.m. against No. 3 Oregon Tech.
