Simpson rallies late in game two, splits conference opener against the Warriors

FULLERTON, Calif. - The softball team had to wait a little longer as they opened conference play today against Westcliff University.

Yesterday's conference opener could not be played because of the heavy rains from the day before as the games have been postponed until further notice.

However, the Red Hawks looked to get in the conference win column behind starter Jacquelyn Lujan

Simpson and Westcliff remained locked in a pitchers duel as the Warriors scratched across the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning and added an insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take the 2-0 lead.

The Warriors starter held the Simpson bats in check as she fired the complete game shutout victory.

The Red Hawks scattered six hits as Kassandra Soria notched a two-hit performance.

Lujan took the tough loss as she fired six innings of two-run softball while allowing just four hits and striking out 10 Warrior batters.

Simpson looked to bounce back in game two as the Warriors drew first blood in the fourth inning as they plated three runs off five hits.

With its backs against the wall and facing a three-run deficit in the top of the seventh inning with two outs. The Red Hawks rallied for five runs on two outs as they took advantage of two huge Westcliff errors.

Samantha Diaz kicked off the rally with an RBI single and Nicolena Holen drove home the go-ahead run on a RBI single to left field.

Jessica Ulshoeffer sealed the come-from-behind win as she fired a scoreless bottom half of the seventh inning.

The Red Hawks continue conference play tomorrow as they take on La Sierra at 11 am and 1 pm to kick off a four-game series.
