ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Simpson softball team headed down to Rocklin, CA to take on DII opponent Jessup University in a doubleheader today.
The Warriors jumped out to the early 6-0 lead as they plated two runs in the first and four runs in the second inning with the help of five Simpson errors.
Simpson got on the board in the fourth inning as they plated two runs as
Hollee Jamison and
Kayley Vaillette picked up RBI singles.
The Warriors got one run back in the bottom half of the inning to extend its lead to 7-2 as they held the Simpson bats in check to take the game-one victory.
Ariel Schulzkump and
Brianna Lopez-Cortez posted two-hit performances to lead the Simpson bats.
Game 2:
The Red Hawks looked to bounce back in game two behind starter
Jacquelyn Lujan as they drew first blood in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Lopez-Cortez.
Jessup got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on a leadoff inside the park home run to tie the game.
Back-to-back singles to begin the second inning by
Samantha Diaz and Vaillette came around to score on a two-run double by
Nicolena Holen to give Simpson the 4-2 lead.
The Red Hawks picked up three more runs in the fourth inning as back-to-back singles by Holen and Schulzkump set the stage for a three-run blast by Lopez-Cortez.
But Lopez-Cortez struck again in the sixth inning as she stroked her second long ball of the game to pad Simpson's 7-1 lead.
The Warriors plated five runs over the final two innings before Lujan closed out the complete game victory to seal the 8-6 win to help Simpson earn a split on the day.
Holen had a team-high four hits to go along with three RBIs while Lopez-Cortez posted a three-hit performance which included two home runs and five RBIs.
Lujan picked up her second win of the year as she fired a complete game while allowing just three earned runs and striking out 10 Jessup batters.
Simpson returns home tomorrow as they take on Warner Pacific in a doubleheader set to start at noon.
