ANGWIN, Calif. - Coming off a 6-6 preseason under first year Head Coach
Anthony Taylor, the women's squad kicked off conference play tonight as they displayed a dominant performance to roll to a 75-55 victory over the Pioneers.
The Red Hawks jumped out to an early 8-0 lead as
Tessa Kinney opened the game on back-to-back buckets followed by a jump shot by
Cerina Nguyen and a layup by
Nikki Thompson.Â
A three-pointer by
Haily Garcia followed by a jumper by
Anna Marshall extended Simpson's largest lead of the first quarter to 11 points as they took the 17-6 advantage.
But the Red Hawk offense exploded in the second quarter to put up a game-high 26 points.Â
Marshall and Nyguyen had a big second quarter as they combined for 15 points as they went 6-8 from the floor.Â
A layup followed by back-to-back free throws by Nguyen extended Simpson's lead to 24 points as they took the commanding 30-16 advantage.Â
Simpson came into the second half firing as
Zara Dumatol and Marshall connected on back-to-back three-pointers to extend Simpson's commanding lead to 25 points.Â
Dumatol had herself a big fourth quarter as she scored a team-high nine points. She drilled three three-pointers as she went 3-4 from way downtown.Â
Simpson had a big game from its starting five as all five starters notched double-digit scoring performances; Marshall with 16, Dumatol with 15, Nguyen with 14, and Thompson and Kinney with 11 points each.Â
Marshall had a team-high 16 points to go along with four assists and three steals.
Nguyen and Thompson each notched a double-double as they combined for 25 points and 12 boards each.Â
The Red Hawks look to stay hot as they return this week on Saturday for its conference home opener against California Maritime Academy at 2 pm.Â
