Red Hawks Win 9th Straight Conference Game, Gomes Breaks Single-Season HR Record

PASADENA, CA. - Simpson University baseball traveled South to face Providence Christian looking to secure the final playoff spot with the Cal Pac tournament looming.

The Red Hawks dominated each game sweeping PCC and winning their 9th consecutive conference game and jumping to 11-10 in the Cal Pac after a 2-10 start.

Simpson began the series with a 12-5 win with Braxton Kings leading the way with a 3-4 performance at the plate, with two doubles and three RBIs. Connor Caporale records with the win on the mound with 6.0 innings pitched, allowing just six hits, and two earned runs.

In game two, Simpson's bats were a bit quieter but were still able to pull off a 5-2 win thanks in part to another nice performance from Eric Winchester. Winchester dealt for six innings, allowing just two runs and six hits, and added 11 strikeouts to continue his reign as the conference leader in Ks. He is currently 17th in the country in strikeouts and 21st in strikeouts per nine innings.

Max Lopez was the leader at the plate coming into score twice on a 3-4 game at the dish.

The finale was similar to game one with lots of runs being scored as SU took the sweep, 12-7.

The big blast for Simpson came off the bat of Logan Gomes who connected on a 3-run homerun to extend the Red Hawks lead in the 7th inning. With that homerun, Gomes becomes the record holder for most home runs in a single season with 11. He broke the career home run record earlier this season as well for Simpson.

As the conference currently stands the Red Hawks are in a firm position to hold the 5th and final playoff spot with the potential to reschedule rainout games from earlier in the conference. However, based on current winning percentages, regardless of what happens with games that are currently scheduled Simpson would be the 5th seed and should qualify for the tournament.

As the Red Hawks wait on conference decisions, they will face Oregon Tech in the final non-conference games of the year next Saturday, April 29th in Klamath Falls.
