Atherton, Calif. - The men's basketball team traveled back down to the Bay Area to take on GSAC and soon-to-be D2 opponent Menlo College this afternoon.
The Red Hawks held its own and fought tough against the 6-1 Menlo squad but ultimately fell 85-63.
The first half of play was a back-and-forth battle that fell in favor of the Oaks 27-22 going into the half.
The Oaks jumped out to a 3-0 lead but
Parker Martens drained a three from way downtown to even the score.
Simpson had some key runs that saw them go up by as much as five points on four separate occasions.
Garret Streufert's layup and Jace Mill's three-point play helped key the first 5-0 run.
Freshman
Kellen Torrey hit some key jumpers and shots beyond the arc that helped sustain Simpson's early lead.
However, the Oaks came roaring back on a 13-4 run that pushed Menlo in front heading into the half.
Torrey was the leading scorer at the half with five points including one steal and rebound.
Osumanu Nuhu led the charge in the paint as he registered four defensive rebounds to go along with three points.
Simpson had a big second half as they put up 41 points. However, the hard-fought half was not enough to run down the Oaks.
Nuhu continued his dominance in the paint as he put up 10 points in the second half to finish the game with a team-high 13 points on the night.
Torrey had a solid night as he recorded 10 points and three rebounds.
Drey Ubas had his third consecutive double-digit game as he registered 11 points and two assists.
Ubas continues to stay hot as he is averaging 19.0 points over the last three games.
Simpson will look to bounce back as they take on Lincoln University this Tuesday at home at 7 PM to conclude its preseason play.
