Simpson Comes Up Short on the Road Against Jessup

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The men's basketball team hit the road yesterday to Rocklin, CA to take on GSAC and soon-to-be D2 opponent William Jessup University.

The Red Hawks and Warriors tussled it out at Warrior Arena in a back-and-forth contest. However, Jessup prevailed and held onto the 80-76 victory.

Simpson played a tough first half as junior guard Drey Ubas got the night's scoring started for the Red Hawks as he nailed a mid-range jumper.

Jessup looked to pull away early as Simpson found themselves in a 19-point deficit. But an 11-0 run put the Red Hawks right back in the game.

Ubas and Kevin Robello were the two key players during the hot stretch.

Ubas drilled two three-pointers from way downtown and Robello was able to connect for a jump shot and a three-pointer to pull Simpson within eight points.

The Warriors would go into the half with a four-point lead, 38-34.

Simpson dominated the first half as they outscored Jessup 15-5 off turnovers.

Simpson's guards Ubas and Robello led the charge for the offense in the first half as they combined for 22 points and three assists.

The second half of play set up a thrilling finish at Warrior Arena as Sam Shields opened the second half with a three-pointer to pull Simpson within one point.

An 8-0 Red Hawk's run fueled by a layup and a couple of free throws by Osumanu Nuhu was capped by a Parker Martens bucket that helped Simpson grab its first lead on the night, 67-65.

However, the Warriors would regain the lead but for a short period as Simpson regained the lead with less than two minutes left on a key three-point play by Garret Streufert.

Streufert was able to power through the foul and make the layup to tie the game and later convert on the free throw to give Simpson the one point lead.

But five unanswered Jessup points doomed Simpson as they would hold onto the 80-76 victory over the Red Hawks.

Simpson had solid contributions all around as they had three players record double-digit points.

Drey Ubas had quite the night as he had a season-high 25 points while shooting 9-16 from the floor and 5-9 beyond the arc.

Garret Streufert had a solid game in the paint as he registered 13 points and seven rebounds.

Kevin Robello rounded out the trio as he recorded 11 points while shooting 4-8 from the floor and 2-4 from beyond the arc.

The Red Hawks will look to rebound as they hit the road to take on another GSAC opponent and soon-to-be D2 school, Menlo College this Saturday at 3 PM.
