Baseball Takes One of Three Against Menlo in Season Opening Series

ATHERTON, Calif. - Simpson University baseball began its 2023 season on the road this past weekend taking on Menlo College.

The Red Hawks struggled to get the bats going in games one and two, but the pitching in game two from SU was outstanding, allowing just one run and three hits in the shortened seven-inning doubleheader. SU fell in game one 7-2, and 1-0 in game two.

Simpson's bats woke up for game three on Saturday, bringing in six runs in the 6-5 win. Connor Caporale recorded the win for Simpson with 5.2 innings pitched and just earned a run given up, striking out five Oaks batters. Max Lopez got credit for the save for his inning of work to hold off Menlo and record the final three outs.

The Red Hawks scored all six runs in the final four innings beginning in the 6th inning when Logan Gomes scored on a passed ball. In the 7th, Alex Woo hit a pinch-hit single to right field that scored Andreyes Palacios. Simpson benefited from a few Menlo mistakes including an error that allowed Chase Rossman and Jesse Coats to score in the three-run 7th inning.

SU scored once more in each of the 8th and 9th innings which would end up being just enough to hold off Menlo.,

Andreyes Palacios led SU in hitting in the game-three win going 2-4 with one run scored.

The Red Hawks will continue their road trip to begin the season as they will head to Oakland to face Holy Names for a three-game series that starts on Friday, Feb. 3 at 1 PM.
