Simpson Drops Pitcher's Duel to St. Xavier, 1-0

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Facing the NAIA national pitcher of the year, Nicole Nonnemacher from St. Xavier, the Simpson lineup failed to muster any offensive chances and fell to the Cougars 1-0 on the opening day of the 2016 NAIA Softball World Series. The Red Hawks fall to the consolation bracket and will play an elimination game Saturday at 8:00 a.m. against Williams Baptist (Ark.).

Simpson starter Paris Hallums struggled with her control throughout her 5.0 innings pitched. She walked seven and hit two more, including a walk and hit batter in the decisive third frame for St. Xavier. With those two runners aboard, Callie Brown singled to left field to drive in the game's lone run with two outs. In all, the Cougars stranded 12 runners. The Red Hawks only managed three on base.

Nonnemacher allowed a two-out single in the first inning to Courtney Thomas and that was it. Simpson got two runners on base in the second, but could not manage a clutch base hit. Kristin Beckman opened the inning hit by a pitch, and Jessica Dager worked a one-out base on balls. Taylor Hill and Missy Silveira struck out to end the threat. The Red Hawks struck out 13 times on the night.

Carlye Avey relieved Hallums and gave up just one hit in 2.0 innings.

The Red Hawks will now need to win seven straight games over a six-day span to bring home a national title.
