Red Hawks Strike Early to Defeat OIT, Advance to Bracket Championship Game

REDDING, Calif. - No. 7 ant top-seeded Simpson scored four runs in the first, and Carlye Avey (20-0) made those runs stand up in a complete-game 4-2 victory Tuesday over Oregon Tech. The win puts the Red Hawks in Wednesday's championship game of the 2016 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round, Simpson Bracket.

After Avey and the SU defense posted a zero in the top half of the first, the Red Hawk offense scored all it would need in its first at-bat. Kaylana Mah singled to open the game followed by back-to-back walks to load the bases. Bailey Akins singled home two runs, and Kara Wall's base hit plated another run before OIT recorded an out. Jessica Dager knocked in the fourth run of the inning reaching on a fielder's choice. The Owls' starter, Ann-Marie Guischer, failed to record an out before being lifted and suffered the loss inside the circle.

With the four-run cushion, Avey and the Red Hawk defense took over. The left-handed ace allowed six hits and just one earned run in securing her 20th victory on the season without a loss.

Oregon Tech rallied for a run in the sixth after Karly Leveque opened the inning with a triple and scored on McKenzie Shrum's sacrifice fly. The Owls pushed across an unearned run in the seventh and brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but Leveque's fly ball was caught in deep centerfield by Missy Silveira. Silveira saved a run earlier in the game for the Red Hawks with an outfield assist to home plate to end the OIT threat in the third inning.

Simpson has now won 15 straight games and improves to 42-4 on the season. The Red Hawks will play on Wednesday at noon against the team remaining from two elimination games to follow later Tuesday. Oregon Tech falls to the loser's bracket and will play the winner of the elimination game between Eastern Oregon and Dickinson State at 3:30 today.
