Simpson Holds Off Antelope Valley in Cal-Pac Home Opener

REDDING, Calif. -- Jacob Kaler poured in 24 points, and Marc Kirkland had 17 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, including the game-clinching three-point play in the final seconds as Simpson held off a furious Antelope Valley surge to win its conference home opener, 82-77, Friday night at the Heritage Center.

Simpson led 61-48 with 6:37 to play, but the Pioneers responded with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to just four points before Kaler was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all the subsequent free throws to slow the UAV momentum. The Pioneers were able to cut the lead to a one-possession game with under a minute to play, but the Red Hawks iced the game on Kirkland's breakaway layup and completed the three-point play after being fouled on the play.

Josh Brakkee added 14 points for Simpson, which has won back-to-back games for the first time this season, both Cal-Pac victories. Joseph Bosetti chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds.

Franky Teran led UAV with 24 points. Josh Sanchez grabbed 11 rebounds.

Simpson faces La Sierra on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Center. The game is part of a women's / men's doubleheader against LSU.
