Men's Soccer Defeat Beacons and Make History

EUGENE, Ore. - The Simpson University men's soccer team traveled north to take on the Beacons of Northwest Christian University on Sept. 11. The Red Hawks earned a 4-3 victory in thrilling in come-from-behind fashion in extra time.

The Beacons started the match off strong with Sergio Maldonado netting a goal in the fourth minute to make it 1-0. The Red Hawks quickly tied the game at 1-1 when Mitch Boyle sent in a goal off a James Lemus free-kick. The Beacons regained the lead just before the halftime break when Isaiah Blake put one past Red Hawk keeper Michael Jones to make it 2-1.

The Beacons seemingly seized control of the game in the 63rd minute when Chris Hendler scored to give them a two-goal advantage. Simpson was given a lifeline when Jacob Muniz scored a great solo goal to bring the Red Hawks within one with just three minutes remaining in the game. Just one minute later, Brandon Jacobsen scored the tying goal and sent the game into extra time.

In the second period of extra time, Jacobson scored the winning goal off an assist from Muniz and sealed the Red Hawks' 4-3 victory.
