Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Simpson Rally Falls Short in Season Opener

REDDING, Calif. - A sluggish first half led to a 16-point halftime deficit and despite rallying to cut the game to as few as six points late in the second half, Simpson dropped its men's basketball season opener, 88-77, to Eastern Oregon on Friday at the Heritage Center.

The Mountaineers grabbed 21 offensive rebounds for the game and in the first 20 minutes converted those extra opportunities into a 10-0 advantage in second chance points to build a 46-30 edge over the Red Hawks. That lead grew to as many as 21 in the first two minutes of the final stanza before the hosts found life and began to cut into the EOU lead.

Led by Jacob Kaler's 22 points and 15 from Josh Delamarter, the Red Hawks scrapped their way back into the game. Otar Pkhakadze scored nine points and dished out a team-high five assists, while Josh Brakkee just missed a double-double with nine points and a team-high nine boards.

A three-pointer by Kaler cut the Mountaineer lead to six, 82-76, with just under a minute to play, but the Red Hawks would get no closer.

Trell Washington led all scorers and rebounders with 24 and 14, respectively for Eastern. The Mountaineers had five players reach double figures in scoring, adding Brandon Hoston (19), Case Rada (16), Tate De Laveaga (10), and Kalvin Johanson (10). EOU held a 50-32 edge on the glass.

The two teams will play each other again in just a few hours with another matchup coming Saturday at the Heritage Center beginning at 3:00 p.m.
