Edgar Mendez enters his third season as the Head Coach of the Simpson University women’s basketball program. He has been the women’s basketball head coach at Simpson University since the beginning of the 2021-22 season.
During the 2022-2023 season, Coach Mendez and his coaching staff were vital in the development of several student-athletes who went on to receive Cal Pac honors, including “1st Team All-Conference and Newcomer of the Year” (Celina Tress), “1st Team All-Conference” (Livi Lindsey) and “2nd team All-Conference” (Sandra Berrocal).
In a year full of firsts, Edgar Mendez was voted the conference’s, “Coach of the Year” award. He guided the Red hawks to records of 20-11 overall and 16-4 Cal Pac during his second campaign while qualifying for the Cal Pac Tournament as the 2nd seed while receiving a bye. The Red Hawks won 20 games for the first time since joining the NAIA. They also won their first game in the conference tournament and made history as the first team to make it to the NAIA national tournament in school history.
In his inaugural season Coach Mendez led the team to a 9-17 overall record and a 6-6 Cal Pac record while being the 6th seed and making the Cal Pac tournament in his first season. Senior Bree Northern was selected as 2nd team All-Conference during the 2021-22 season.
Mendez came to Simpson University after producing a 4-year run as head coach at San Diego Christian College and 5 years as an Assistant at his Alma mater.
Mendez is a 2013 graduate of San Diego Christian College in El Cajon, Ca. with a degree in Human Development. Edgar and his wife, Rosa Maria, reside in Redding.
