Simpson splits day one against Corban

SALEM, Ore. - The Red Hawks softball team split the first day of play against Corban today as they dropped game one 6-2 and bounced back by taking the second game 5-1.

The Warriors road two big long balls in the first game off the bat of Mckenna Hanson and Shelby Hillyer.

Corban drew first blood in the second inning as they scored the game's first run on a wild pitch before Simpson tied the game in the following inning on a Corban error.

Hanson untied the game in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run blast to right field. Simpson pulled within one as Nayzeth Gonzalez legged out a dribbler up the first base line to pull the Red Hawks within one.

However, the second long ball of the day for the Warriors added three huge insurance runs off the bat of Hillyer.

Corban's starter Miranda Scovil shut the door as she earned the complete game victory, striking out 10 Red Hawks while scattering four hits.

Simpson's Jacquelyn Lujan took the loss as she fired 6.0 innings while striking out nine batters.

On offense, the four hits came from Brianna Lopez-Cortez and Gonzalez as they each posted two-hit games.

For the Warriors, Irene Vandyke went three-for-three, but the big swings came from Hanson and Hillyer.

Game 2:

The Red Hawks bounced back in game two to even the series on a 4-1 victory.

Corban jumped on the board first in the first inning as they took advantage of a Simpson error to plate the game's first run on an RBI single by Peyton Foreman.

The Red Hawks offense broke through in the fourth inning as they plated four runs off three hits and one Warrior error.

Lopez-Cortez drove home the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly into left center before the Red Hawks took the lead on an RBI bunt single by Ariel Schulzkump. A key Warriors error allowed the Red Hawks to add two huge insurance runs to take the 4-1 lead.

That is all the runs starter Grace Chojnacki needed as she earned the complete game victory, scattering four hits over 7.0 innings of work while allowing one unearned run.

Schulzkump led the Simpson offense with a two-for-three game as she notched an RBI.

The Red Hawks are back in action tomorrow to conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 11 am.
