REDDING, Calif. - The men's baseball team split the first day of play against Nelson (AZ) to begin Senior Weekend.
A pair of long balls by Ethan Gustafson and Gannon Aguliar gave the Warriors the early 3-0 lead before the Red Hawks exploded in the bottom of the third inning for six runs on three hits. Back-to-back home runs included a grand slam by
JJ Torrente and a solo blast by
Owen Hayes.
Eric Mora,
Bo Valladao, and Torrente added RBI swings in the third, sixth, and eighth innings to take the series opener 10-5.
On the mound,
Daniel Aceto picked up the win as he tossed 5.2 innings of four-run ball while scattering seven hits.
Torrente swung the hot bat as he went a perfect four-for-four with six RBI's and one hit-by-pitch, including a grand slam and two RBI singles as he reached bases safely in all five trips to the plate.
Hayes followed close behind with a three-hit performance, while
Cesar Ortega,
Aden Munoz, and Mora each posted two-hit performances.
The Warriors took the 3-0 lead in game two before the Red Hawks chipped away in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Hayes.
But Nelson added four huge runs in the top of the seventh inning to ice the second game of the day to earn the split.
Hayes led the Simpson bats in game two with a two-hit game, which included an RBI double to plate the Red Hawks' lone run.
Simpson looks to take the series tomorrow as they celebrate Senior Day at 11 am as first pitch is scheduled for 11:35 am.
