Simpson dispatches PUC in straight sets

Nine Red Hawks take home Cal Pac honors

WHITTIER, Calif. - The men's volleyball squad continues to roll as they pushed their win streak to four games as they took down PUC in straight sets today.

The Red Hawks broke away in the first set on a 6-1 run to take the 22-15 lead as Dehryn Brown, Akira Davies, and Diego Chavez each notched a kill. Afatia Thompson Jr. put the finishing touches on the first set with a kill to close out the 25-18 first set victory.

The Pioneers took the three-point lead as they outscored Simpson 7-1. But the Red Hawks answered with an 8-1 run to take the 23-19 lead. Thompson Jr. anchored the rally as he posted two kills and two blocks.

A kill by Thompson Jr. moved the Red Hawks into set point territory as Diego Chavez sealed the second set 25-22 victory with a kill.

The Red Hawks followed much of the same formula in the third set as they remained tied at 19 before scoring four straight points on kills by Chavez and Brown, an ace by Davies, and a duo block by David Raffaelli and Chavez.

Brown sealed the match victory with his 14th kill of the game to give Simpson the 25-23 straight set victory.

Brown and Davies combined for 25 kills and 14 digs, while Chavez added another 10 kills to go along with a .643 hitting percentage on the game and a team-high four total blocks.

Tyce Nakamura had another solid game as he notched 33 assists, while Hudson Clark led the defense with 10 digs.

The Red Hawks capped off a stellar day as they collected end-of-the-year Cal Pac awards. Head Coach Steven Brasher earned Co-Coach of the Year with Westcliff's Alex Griffiths, while freshman sensation Dehryn Brown took home Attacker and Freshman of the Year honors.

Coach Brasher earns his first Cal Pac Co-Coach of the Year honor as he led the Red Hawks to a 17-11 season and an 8-3 conference record.

The true freshman from Elk Grove, CA, dazzled on the court as Brown led the team with 394 kills, 31 service aces, and 184 digs.

Brown led the All-Conference selections with a first-team honor, while Akira Davies, Diego Chavez, and Jacob Shelton earned second-team honors. Davies and Shelton repeated as All-Conference selections for the second consecutive year. Chavez makes his first appearance on the list as a middle blocker as a true-freshman. Tyce Nakamura and Afatia Thompson Jr. round out the All-Conference awards as they each earned honorable mentions.

David Raffaelli, Adonijah James Raffaelli, Shelton, and Nakamura proved to be academic forces as they earned spots on the All-Academic team. Adonijah James Raffaelli represented Simpson and took home the Champions of Character award.

Simpson looks to keep rolling as they open in the semi-final game tomorrow against Pacific Union at 11:30 am.
