WHITTEIER, Calif. - The men's volleyball squad ended its season today as they defeated Pacific Union College in straight sets to begin the day and advanced to the championship game this afternoon.
The Red Hawks took down the Pioneers with three thrilling victories, 25-22, 25-20, and 26-24.
Dehryn Brown and
Akira Davies combined for 28 kills while Brown posted a team-high 10 digs and Davies registered a .323 hitting percentage in the game.
Tyce Nakamura had a solid game as he posted 32 assists, while
Jacob Shelton notched a team-high four total blocks.
With the win, Simpson earned a spot in the Cal Pac Championship game against Westcliff.
The Red Hawks took the first set 25-18 on a crucial 8-0 run that flipped a 13-10 deficit into an 18-13 lead on an ace by Davied Raffaelli and hitting errors by the Warriors.
Simpson took the late one-point lead on an ace by
Diego Chavez. But the Warriors rallied for three straight points to take the 24-22 lead before closing out the 25-23 second set victory.
The Warriors held the 19-17 lead before the Red Hawks reeled off four straight points to take the 21-19 lead on kills by Brown and Chavez. The Warriors answered with six straight points to take the 25-21 third set victory.
Westcliff closed out the match with a 25-21 fourth set victory as they paced the four-set as they prevailed over the Red Hawks' comeback.
Brown led the team with 19 kills, Davies followed close behind with 10 kills, Thompson Jr. led the defense with 12 digs, Nakamura notched 38 assists, and Shelton posted five total blocks.
With the loss, Simpson ends its finest season under Head Coach
Steven Brasher as they finished 18-12. They celebrated eight Cal Pac Awards, highlighted by Attacker and Freshman of the Year
Dehryn Brown. The Red Hawks now enter the offseason looking to retool as they lose seniors David and
Adonijah James Raffaelli.
