REDDING, Calif. - The Northern California weather storm had its effects on the Simpson Round Robin today as the first set of games of the round robin play were cancelled due to heavy snow in the early morning.
The Red Hawks began the tournament by taking on former Cal Pac rival Westcliff University.
The Warriors broke out the bats early as they plated six runs in the first two innings. As they chased the Red Hawks starter
Katelyne Robinett after 1.2 innings of work, before handing the ball to
Jessica Ulshoeffer.
Madison Mendez drove home the first run of the game on an RBI single while the Warriors posted a five-run second inning on five hits as Alyssa Patlan, Sarah Ellerton, and Rachel Varela slugged ground-rule doubles.
Simpson chipped away in the third inning as
Rebekah Millan stroked an RBI double to get the Red Hawks on the board before back-to-back RBI singles by
Brianna Lopez-Cortez and
Olivia Bicondova trimmed the lead in half.
A two-run double into the right-center gap by
Nicolena Holena pushed across two runs to pull the Red Hawks within one after four innings of play.
But the Warrior's center fielder, Alyssa Patlan, came through with a huge defensive assist as she threw out the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning to preserve the one-run lead.
Westcliff kept the momentum in the top of the sixth inning as they broke it open with a four-run inning by taking advantage of two crucial Red Hawk errors to take the 10-5 victory.
Holen, Millan, and Bicondova led the Simpson bats with two hits each as they combined for four RBIs.
Simpson has a busy Friday as they have a triple-header beginning with Park at 10 am and concluding with back-to-back games against Arizona Christian at 2 pm and 4 pm.
