REDDING, Calif. - The women's basketball team celebrated three seniors tonight before its matchup against Stanton University.
Seniors
Anna Marshall,
Cerina Nguyen, and
Haily Garcia celebrated with family and teammates before the night's contest.
Nguyen, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury earlier this season, scored the first points of the night on a team-agreement courtesy basket.
The Elks held the 22-17 lead after one quarter of play before extending their largest lead of the game to nine points midway through the second quarter.
Simpson scored seven straight points on a layup by Destiy Nichols and
Andrea Perez before pulling within one on a three-pointer by Marshall.
A final exchange of buckets between Simpson's Marshall and Stanton's Nicole Ros gave the Elks the 45-41 lead going into the half.
The Red Hawks dominated the third quarter as they outscored Stanton 23-7, as
Moriah Bowles proved lethal from beyond the arc as she drilled four three pointers for a team-high 12 points in the third quarter.
Simpson entered the fourth quarter with a 12-point lead and went up by as much as 13 points in the fourth quarter on a layup by Nichols before holding onto the 84-72 victory.
Nichols paced the Simpson offense with 25 points to go along with six rebounds and five steals.
Bowles proved to be elite from beyond the arc as she posted 21 points while shooting 7-15 from beyond the arc.
Andrea Perez and Marshall rounded out the double-digit performances as they combined for 29 points to go along with 12 rebounds and eight steals.
Simpson hits the road for its final regular-season game of the year against Cal Maritime on Saturday at 5:30 pm.
