VALLEJO, Calif. - The Simpson Red Hawks returned to Redding empty-handed after a 2-1 loss left them yet to book a win this season.
The Red Hawks would have been confident as they won their last 11 games against Cal Maritime, scoring 54 goals and conceding just four. What looked a formality, turned into history for the Keelhaulers.
A second goal in two games for Jonathen Garcia Virgen put Simpson up 1-0 after 15 minutes.
The Keelhaulers, looking to answer, crossed a 31st minute free kick into the box, which was headed into the net by Jose Diaz to level the game up at 1-1.
Tied at 1-1 after the first half, Simpson looked the sharper of the two teams with nine shots compared to Cal Maritime's five.
At the start of the second half, the Keelhaulers earned another free kick, which was thwarted away by the defence, before Mateo Sanchez connected with the rebound to put the ball in the net for a 2-1 lead for the Keelhaulers.
The rest of the game was played under mostly Simpson pressure, with the Red Hawks recording 14 shots in the second half. It wasn't enough, though, as the Keelhaulers were able to close out the 2-1 victory.
Yellow cards were handed to Cal Maritime's Anthony Mercado and Matthew Yoon and Simpson's David Clavijo.
The Simpson Red Hawks now sit at 0-7-2, with their next game being against Westcliff University in Irvine, Calif this coming Friday. The Red Hawks looks to break a streak of three straight losses against the Warriors.
