IRVINE, Calif. - The men's volleyball team concluded its SoCal road trip tonight in Irvine, CA as they fell to the Warriors in straight sets to wrap up conference play.
A kill by
Akira Davies gave Simpson the early 2-1 lead before the Warriors claimed the 8-5 lead.
Simpson reeled off five straight points to take the 10-8 lead as Davies picked up two more kills.
With the score tied at 18,
Jacob Shelton slammed down a huge kill to give Simpson the one-point lead.
However, the Warriors went on a crucial 7-1 to take the first set 25-20 victory to take the 1-0 match lead.
Westcliff jumped out to the early 8-2 lead and held a commanding 22-11 lead before the Red Hawks went on a 9-2 run to pull within four, 24-20.
Shelton helped anchor the comeback as he posted two aces and one kill as
Nathan Richards picked up a kill and
Micah Nakasato registered an ace.
However, this proved to be Simpson's last gasp as the Warriors held off the Red Hawks late rally to take the second set 25-20.
Back-to-back kills by Davies tied the game at two before kills by
Carlos Messer and Richards pulled Simpson within one.
The Warriors held a 10-8 lead before the Red Hawks went on a 5-1 run to take the 13-11 lead on a duo block by
Francis Gates and Shelton combined with kills by Adonijah Raffaelli, Richards, and Messer.
Richards and Davies each posted a team-high eight kills as Richards notched a team-high 10 digs.
Simpson ends its regular season on Wednesday as they take on Jessup University at 6 pm.
