REDDING, Calif. - The women's basketball team took down Warner Pacific tonight, 72-60, in its home opener.
A layup by
Destiny Nichols got the game's scoring started as she scored the Red Hawks' first four points of the game.
Simpson jumped out to the early 13-3 lead as
Cerina Nguyen,
Andrea Perez, and
Anna Marshall each posted buckets.
Lupe Lemus owned the final points of the first quarter as she converted on a layup to give Simpson the 7-10 lead after one quarter of play.
However, the Knights rallied and took the one-point lead with just under five minutes left in the first half.
Marshall and Nguyen helped Simpson reclaim the lead as they both converted on layups. But the Knights went into the half with a 29-26 lead after hitting a three-pointer just before the half.
Coming out of the half,
Monet Dunham converted on a tough bucket as she drew the foul and completed the three-point play to tie the game.
Simpson had a dominant third quarter as they outscored the Knights 25-12, as Perez and Nichols anchored the team with eight points each in the third quarter.
Three straight layups to begin the fourth quarter by
Haily Garcia, Marshall, and Nichols extended Simpson's lead to a game-high 16 points.
That is all they needed as they went on to hold the Knights in check to take the game 72-60.
Perez and Nichols led the way with 19 points each as they combined for 11 rebounds.
Marshall rounded out the double-digit performances with 11 points while shooting 50% from the floor.
Simpson looks to conclude its two-game homestand tomorrow as they take on California Maritime at 4:30 pm.
