IRVINE, Calif. - The boys looked to avenge it's game one loss on Friday with a reverse sweep to take the series against Westcliff.
Game one featured a pitcher's duel as Simpson's
Garrett Brogdon had himself a day on the mound.
Brogdon threw a stellar game as he went 7.1 innings while giving up just three hits and striking out 10 Westcliff batters.
Both teams looked to scratch a run across as the game went seven shutout innings before the Red Hawks broke through in the eighth inning.
A lead-off infield single by
Kade Kupihea came around to score on a Warrior error to break the 0-0 ball game.
Alex Tolbert came through with a huge two-out RBI single to add an insurance run.
The Red Hawks bullpen nailed down the 2-0 lead as
Chad Horton came in relief of Brogdon in the eighth inning and inherited a runner-on first situation.
Horton stranded the runner on first as he induced two fly balls to end the eighth.
Closer
Nathan Palacioz preserved the 2-0 ball game as he fired a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his eighth save of the year and is now tied for the Simpson single season and career record.
Game 2:
Simpson looked for the series win behind starter
Jaydon Tomas.
The Red Hawks grabbed the early 1-0 lead after a leadoff walk to
Kade Kupihea came around to score on a sacrifice fly by
Brady Meeds.
But the Warriors tied the game in the next half inning on a RBI single. Tomas limited the damage as he stranded the bases loaded to keep the game 1-1.
A leadoff double by
Maximiliano Lopez to open the fifth inning put the Red Hawks in business.
Another key sacrifice fly by Meeds put Simpson on top 2-1. But Simpson padded its lead in the following inning on key RBI doubles by
Andreyes Palacios and
Kade Kupihea to extend its 4-1 lead.
The bullpen proved to be nails once again as starter Tomas fired four innings of one-run baseball before handing the ball to the Simpson pen.
Simpson broke it open in the ninth inning with a crooked number as they plated four runs on five hits and one Warrior error.
Dalton Alford,
Chad Horton, and
Nathan Palacioz combined for five innings of shutout baseball and just four Warrior base runners to seal the 8-1 victory.
Simpson pounded out 13 hits and had multi-hit games from
Kade Kupihea,
Maximiliano Lopez,
Micah Kele,
Dominic Folks, and
Andreyes Palacios.
With the win, Simpson improves its conference record to 13-5 and are now in sole possession of second place in the Cal Pac standings as they keep pace with first-place Ben U.
