MESA, Ariz. - The girls continued its AZ road trip as they continued conference play against Benedictine University today in a twin bill.
This is an important series for both teams as coming into the day Ben U is in the fourth spot and Simpson is in the fifth spot with a 5-7 conference record.
The battle of the Red Hawks ensued in the desert as Simpson looked to take game one behind southpaw
Kylee Potes.
Simpson loaded the bases as three of the first four Red Hawks reached base to open the game.
Madyson Welch came through with an RBI single to score
Amy LeGrande from third base to give Simpson the early lead and keep the bases juiced.
Another RBI single by
Kimberlee Walston extended the lead and kept the bases loaded as everyone moved station-to-station.
Ben U tied the game in the bottom of the second inning as back-to-back walks put traffic aboard followed by a two-run RBI bunt single to tie the game.
But a Simpson error gave Ben U the 3-2 lead and extended the inning. Ben U made Simpson pay as they extended its lead to 5-2 on a two-run single.
A lead-off double by
Marissa Ramirez in the left center alley got the Red Hawks started in the fourth inning followed by a Ben U error allowed her to come across to score and cut the deficit 5-3.
LeGrande tied the game with her first home run of the year on a two-run blast to right center field.
Simpson regained the lead on a bases-loaded fielder's choice that scored Ariel Schulzkukmp to make it a 6-5 Red Hawk lead.
Ben U answered back with a crooked number in the bottom half of the inning with seven runs on four hits and one error.
After a quiet top half of the fifth inning for Simpson Ben U sealed the deal in the bottom half of the inning as they plated two runs to end the game in mercy rule fashion.
Game 2:
Simpson looked to rebound as they came out fast and plated five runs on four hits in the first inning.
The first five batters reached base safely to begin the game.
Three straight singles by
Amy LeGrande,
Ariel Schulzkump, and
Nicolena Holen loaded the bases for cleanup batter
Cailey Rizzardo.
Rizzardo worked a walk after beginning 0-2 to begin the at-bat to plate the game's first run.
Madyson Welch came through with a big two-run double to extend Simpson's lead.
This is all starter Jacequlybn Lujan needed as she fired four shutout innings while allowing just one hit.
Simpson padded its lead with one run in the top of the fifth inning when a
Cailey Rizzardo single came around to score on an RBI single by
Adriana Delaney.
Lujan surrendered her first runs of the game in the bottom half of the inning as Ben U plated two runs to make it a 6-2 game.
Simpson added one more insurance run in the top of the seventh inning with some two-out magic. A two-out single by
Marissa Ramirez cued back-to-back singles by Delaney and
Elyse Benson to load the bases.
Ramirez stole the seventh run of the game as she stole home to make it a 7-2 ball game.
Lujan looked to finish the job as Ben U loaded the bases in the final inning. But Lujan fired her seventh strikeout of the game to seal the game two victory.
This marked Lujan's fifth complete game of the year and her third win of the year as she surrendered just six hits and struck out seven Ben U batters.
Simpson notched two-hit performances by
Amy LeGrande,
Madyson Welch, and
Adriana Delaney.
The trio anchored the offense in game two as they combined for six hits and drove in five runs.
Simpson looks to take the series the tomorrow as first pitch in the doubleheader is slated for 11 AM.
