Stower Wins 500th Game as Simpson Sweeps Day Two

MESA, Ariz. - The girls continued play today and looked to hop Ben U in the Cal Pac standings to move into fourth place.

Amy LeGrande continued to stay hot as she led off the game with a towering double down the right-field line.

The Red Hawks threatened and put runners on the corners after a single by Cailey Rizzardo but could not push across the game's first run.

The Red Hawks threatened again in the top of the third inning when they put two runners aboard but could not scratch across the first run of the game.

Starter Kylee Potes cruised through the first four innings as she allowed just three base runners while striking out four Ben U batters.

Back-to-back triples to open the fifth inning by Kimberlee Walston and Kayley Vaillette gave Simpson the 1-0 lead.

Ariel Schulzkump extended Simpson's lead with a one-out RBI single to right field to score Vaillette.

Ben U put the tying run on base and brought the game-winner to the plate but Potes shut down any Ben U comeback as she fired the complete game shutout.

Potes recorded another stellar outing as she surrendered just three hits and five total base runners while punching out five batters.

Simpson had timely hitting from Vaillette, Walston, and Schulzkump to scratch across two runs on seven hits.

Game 2:

Another pitching duel took place in game two with freshman starter Jacquelyn Lujan

Lujan is fresh off a six-hit complete game victory from yesterday's second game of the twin-bill.

She picked up where she left off and fired four shutout innings of two-hit ball to open the last game of the series.

Simpson broke through in the top of the fifth inning when a lead-off double by Kayley Vaillette flipped the lineup and set the stage for the top of the Red Hawks lineup.

Amy LeGrande successfully moved Vaillete up 60 feet on a sacrifice bunt and Ariel Schulzkump drove home the first run of the game on a RBI infield single.

Ben U made some noise in the bottom half of the inning as they put two runners aboard with just one out and took the lead on a two-run single.

Simpson put the pressure back on Ben U as they pushed across the tying run after a one out walk to Adriana Delaney came around to score on back-to-back singles by Kayley Vaillette and Amy LeGrande

A bases-loaded walk to Nicolena Holen pushed across Vaillette for the go-ahead run to take the 3-2 lead.

Simpson turned to its bullpen and summoned lefty Kylee Potes as she fired a clean sixth inning.

The Red Hawks added three crucial insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning on four hits to make it a 6-2 game.

A one-out single by Marissa Ramirez and a double by Adriana Delaney set up a two-run double by Kimberlee Walston

LeGrande added one more run on a two-out RBI single that scored Walston to make it a 6-2 game.

Potes closed out the game and notched the six-out save to win the series and hop Ben U in the playoff race.

Lujan picked up her second win in as many days as she fired five innings of two-run ball and struck out three batters.

The Red Hawk bats recorded 11 hits on the game and were led by a three-hit performance by center fielder Kayley Vaillette

Ariel Schulzkump and Amy LeGrande each notched two-hit games as they combined for four hits and three RBIs.

Simpson fared well in the desert as they went 3-3 against Ben U and Embry-Riddle this past week.

The series win marked a historic day for Head Coach Wayne Stower as he reached the 500 win plateau.

The Red Hawks look to move up in the Cal Pac standings as they take on Park-Gilbert this week Thursday and Friday in a four-game series.
