Simpson Drops Midweek Conference Twin-Bill to ERAU

PRESCOTT, Ariz. - The softball team headed down to Arizona for the second time this year as they took on Embry-Riddle in a doubleheader today.

The Red Hawks and Eagles clashed in a conference twin bill that has been postponed since mid-March.

Game one featured a pitcher's duel with senior southpaw Kylee Potes

The first hit of the game came in the third inning on an ERAU double with one out.

An unfortunate bounce for Simpson as the Eagles grabbed the first lead of the game on a Simpson error.

However, Potes fired her fourth strikeout of the game to strand one runner to end the third inning of play.

But Simpson got its first hit of the game in the fourth inning on a lead-off double by Amy LeGrande to put the tying run in scoring position.

A successful sacrifice bunt by Ariel Schulzkump moved LeGrande to third base with just one out.

But the Eagles pitching stranded the tying run 60 feet away as they induced a ground ball and a strikeout to end the threat.

Embry-Riddle padded its 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning when a one-out double came around to score on an RBI single.

Potes fired six innings of three-hit softball and allowed just two runs and one earned while striking out seven Eagle batters.

But the Red Hawk bats could not get anything going against ERAU as they mustered one hit and fell in game one 2-0.

Game 2:

The Red Hawks looked to salvage a split on the day behind freshman arm Jacquelyn Lujan

Lujan worked around a two-out double as she fired a swinging strikeout to end the first inning.

A lead off single by Cailey Rizzardo followed by a hit-by-pitch to Jessica Heck put early runners aboard.

Following a wild pitch a sacrifice fly to right field by Hollee Jamison got the Red Hawks on the board.

A lead-off double by Embry-Riddle put the go-ahead run in scoring position to begin the second inning.

The Eagles pushed across the tying run on an RBI single. But a big defensive assist by center fielder Kayley Vaillete helped cut down one runner at the plate as ERAU grabbed the 2-1 lead.

A lead-off single by Vaillette moved into scoring position after a stolen base with the top of the Re Hawks lineup coming to the plate.

An error by the first baseman allowed Vaillette to score the tying run. The Red Hawks loaded the bases but the Eagles induced an inning-ending fly out to strand the bases loaded.

A two-out double in the top of the fourth inning by Vaillette provided some two-out magic as Simpson pushed across the go-ahead run on a single back up the middle by LeGrande.

Lujan stranded a lead-off double in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the 3-2 lead.

A big fly by Cailey Rizzardo added a much-needed insurance run to take the 4-2 lead. This marked the third long ball of the year for Rizzardo.

LeGrande came through again with a clutch two-out RBI single that drove in a lead-off walk by Elyse Benson to extend Simpson's lead to 5-2.

Embry-Riddle made some noise in the bottom of the sixth inning as they plated two runs on a double to make it a 5-4 game.

This ended the day for Lujan as she went 5.1 innings while giving up four runs on nine hits.

Potes ended the threat and stranded the tying run on second base as she induced a fly ball and a strikeout.

The Eagles tied the game in the home half of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to tie the game 5-5 to push the game into extra innings.

However, the Eagles walked it off in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the sweep on the day.

The Red Hawk offense notched six hits and were carried by Amy LeGrande, Cailey Rizzardo, and Kayley Vaillette

LeGrande, Rizzardo, and Vaillette all recorded two hits in the game and combined for four runs batted in. Rizzardo notched a big fly, Vaillette had a double, and LeGrande had to clutch RBI singles.

Simpson looks to bounce back against Ben U this weekend.
