ROCKLIN, Calif. - The softball team headed down to Rocklin, CA today to take on the #8 team in the nation, William Jessup Warriors in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Warriors jumped on sophomore starter
Jessica Ulshoeffer early in the first inning as they plated two runs to grab the early lead.
However, the Warriors never looked back as they scored 11 runs on 13 hits.
The Jessup starter held the Red Hawks bats at bay as Simpson scattered three hits.
Simpson scratched two runs across in the top of the fourth inning on three hits.
Singles by
Amy LeGrande and
Nicolena Holen and a walk to
Cailey Rizzardo put traffic aboard for Simpson.
Kimberly Walston came up with the big two-run double to put Simpson on the board.
However, the Warriors proved too much as they went on to win 11-2 in five innings due to the mercy rule being in effect.
Game 2:
The Red Hawks looked to bounce back in game 2 of the doubleheader behind starter
Katelyn Thomasson.
Simpson grabbed the early lead on a single back up the middle by
Nicolena Holen to score
Kayley Vaillette from second base.
But the Warriors answered back in the bottom half of the inning by tying the game 1-1.
Jessup claimed the lead in the bottom of the third inning after plating two runs on three hits to grab the 3-1 lead.
A lead-off walk to
Madyson Welch came around to score on a double by
Cailey Rizzardo that plated courtesy runner
Lily Rojas to make it a 3-2 game.
However, the Warriors added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 6-2 game.
Simpson chipped away in the top of the sixth inning as a single by Rizzardo came around to score on an RBI double in right-center by
Adriana Delaney.
Facing a three-run deficit in the seventh inning, Simpson brought the tying run to the plate after back-to-back singles by LeGrande and Vaillette.
Back-to-back errors by the Warriors allowed LeGrande to score to make it a 6-4 game with the bases loaded with just one out.
But Jessup closed the door as they induced a popup and a ground out to end the ball game.
Amy LeGrande led the bats as she reached base safely in all four plate appearances and notched a perfect 3-3 game.
Cailey Rizzardo followed close behind with a two-hit performance that included an RBI double.
Simpson looks to continue more nonconference play next week as they take on Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, OR on Tuesday.
