ESCONDITO, Calif. - The men's basketball team ended its season in Escondito, CA this afternoon as they fell to the Saint Katherine Firebirds 81-100.
The Firebirds jumped out to the early 5-0 lead before a three-pointer from
Drey Ubas put Simpson on the board.
However, the Red Hawks played catch-up for the rest of the first half as they trailed St. Kat.
But a couple of three-pointers by
Kyle Brennon and
Trey Conrad pulled Simpson within five points on two different occasions.
The final points before the half belonged to a
Parker Martens tip-in off a missed jumper by
Sam Shields.
St. Kat dominated the first half of play as they outscored Simpson 56-38.
Senior
Kyle Brennon led the charge with nine points to go along with four assists.
Drey Ubas followed close behind with eight points and two steals.
Simpson looked to chip away early as a
Derek Gorden layup to open the second half of play cut into the 56-40 deficit.
Followed by a highly contested layup by Brennon that drew a foul. Brennon converted his free throw to complete the three-point play.
Simpson fought and battled but could not overcome the second-half deficit.
Senior
Kevin Robello recorded the final points of his career as he nailed a three-pointer with under a minute to play.
St. Kat went on to hold onto the lead and defeat Simpson 81-100.
The Red Hawks tallied four players with double-digit scoring performances. This included
Kyle Brennon,
Drey Ubas,
Derek Gorden, and
Trey Conrad.
In the final games of their career, Brennon scored a team-high 14 points to go along with eight assists,
Garrett Streufert recorded four rebounds and two assists, and
Kevin Robello notched five points.
With the loss, Simpson says goodbye to four seniors;
Kyle Brennon,
Kevin Robello,
Garrett Streufert, and Johnny Cruz.
Simpson finishes its first year under Head Coach David Cone with a 6-14 conference record that saw them fall short in a few highly competitive games with top Cal Pac teams.
The Red Hawks are headed into the offseason with a lot to look forward to in the upcoming season under Head Coach David Cone.
