Simpson Picks Up First Win of the Year, Splits With Corban

REDDING, Calif. - The girl's softball team picked up their first win of the year in game one of a doubleheader against Corban University today, 3-0.

Starter Jacquelyn Lujan picked up her collegiate win today as she threw a complete game shutout against the Corban Warriors.

The Red Hawks grabbed the first lead of the game in the second inning when they platted the game's first run on back-to-back hits.

A lead-off double off the left field fence by Cailey Rizzardo just barely missed a round-tripper by a few feet putting an early runner in scoring position for the Red Hawks.

Freshman Ariel Schulzkump picked up her first career RBI on a single to right center that scored Rizzardo from second base.

Simpson struck again in the bottom half of the third inning with another run after a lead-off double by Amy LeGrande came around to score on a Warrior error.

For the third straight inning, the Red Hawks scratched a run across on a lead-off walk by Rizzardo that would later come across to score.

But that is all the run support Lujan needed as she fired a complete game shutout while allowing just three hits and punching out six Warriors.

Rizzardo led the Red Hawk bats in the first game as she reached base in all three plate appearances with two doubles and a walk.

Kayley Vailette, Nicolena Holen, and Ariel Schulzkump each recorded a hit to round out the Red Hawks offense.

Game 2:

The Warriors answered back in game two with a 1-0 victory over Simpson.

Senior southpaw Kylee Potes threw exceptionally well as she threw a no-hitter but surrendered the game's only run in the top of the first inning.

Simpson tallied six hits but were unable to string them together.

A leadoff walk to Kimberly Walston in the bottom of the fifth inning followed by a Jessica Heck sacrifice bunt put the tying run in scoring position.

Pinch hitter Nicolena Holen hit a sharp single back up the middle but Walston was thrown out at the plate on a perfect two-hop throw by the center fielder.

Simpson threatened again in the bottom of the sixth inning when Adriana Delaney legged out an infield single with two outs.

Followed by a Madyson Welch single put two runners on with two outs. However, the Warriors escaped the inning with the 1-0 lead.

Simpson put the game-tying run on base with two outs after a Hollee Jamison infield single. But the Corban Warrior's were able to squeak by and hold onto the 1-0 victory.

Potes had quite the game on the mound as she fired seven complete innings while punching out nine batters and giving up no hits.

Madyson Welch led the Red Hawk bats in game two with two hits followed by single hit performances by Adriana Delaney, Cailey Rizzardo, Hollee Jamison, and Nicolena Holen

Simpson welcomes Oregon Tech this weekend in a doubleheader on Saturday that is set to begin at 12 PM.
