Red Hawks Drops Twin-Bill in Day One of Jessup Classic

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The softball team participated in the first day of the William Jessup Classic down in Rocklin, CA.

The tournament consisted of The College of Idaho, Menlo, Oregon Tech, and Jessup.

The Red Hawks played The College of Idaho in the second game of the day but fell to the Yotes 10-2 in five innings due to the mercy rule being in effect.

Simpson got on the board first in the top of the first inning after a two-out single by Nicolena Holen came around to score on an Adriana Delaney RBI single.

But the Yotes got to starter Jacequelyn Lujan with a little two-out magic of their own.

Lujan retired the first two batters in the bottom of the second before the Yotes pushed across three runs off two hits to grab the 3-1 lead.

The Yotes scratched across another run in the bottom of the third inning to extend its 4-1 lead.

Simpson chipped away and platted one run in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single by Marissa Ramirez.

A one-out double by Amy LeGrande helped set up the RBI opportunity for Ramirez.

Freshman Katelyn Thomasson came in relief of Lujan in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Red Hawks trailed 5-2.

However, the Yote's offense exploded as they platted five runs to end the game 10-2 in five innings due to the mercy rule.

Simpson notched two runs off four hits.

Nicolena Holen, Adriana Delaney, Amy LeGrande, and Marissa Ramirez each recorded single-hit performances. LeGrande smacked the lone extra-base hit of the game for Simpson with a double in the fourth inning.

Game 2:

Simpson looked to bounce back as they took on host school William Jessup in the final game of the day.

The Red Hawks followed the same formula as in game one as a first-inning single by Nicolena Holen came around to score to give SU the early lead.

A one-out single by Holen followed by a single by Ariana Delaney put two runners on with just one out.

A clutch RBI single up the middle by Madyson Welch platted Holen for the first run of the game.

Starter Kylee Potes threw another gem as she did not allow a run until the sixth inning.

Simpson added an important insurance run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Welch.

A one-out single by Holen helped set up Welch's second RBI opportunity of the game as the Red Hawks grabbed the 2-0 lead.

Potes surrendered her first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 2-1 game after six complete innings.

Potes retired the first two batters of the final frame on a pop-up and strikeout.

However, a two-out single kept the Warriors alive. But a two-run walk-off homer stunned the Red Hawks as they fell to the Warriors 3-2.

Southpaw Kylee Potes took her second consecutive tough loss as she scattered six hits and allowed three runs while striking out five Warriors.

Nicolena Holen and Kimberlee Walston led the Red Hawk bats with three-hit performances.

Walston had a perfect 3-3 performance which included a double and Simpson's lone extra base hit of the game.

Adriana Delaney and Madyson Welch each notched two-hit performances.

Welch provided the run support as she drove in both runs on two RBI singles.

Holen had quite the first day as she registered four hits in seven trips to the plate while scoring three runs.

Delaney had a solid first day as well as she notched three hits on the day in seven trips to the plate while driving in one run.

Simpson looks to bounce back tomorrow as they continue in the Jessup Invitational in a doubleheader that starts against Oregon Tech at 10:30 AM  followed by Menlo at 2 PM to conclude the day.
