SALEM, Ore. - The women's squad took on Corban University tonight as they took part in the Corban Classic.
The first points of the night belonged to junior guard
Zara Dumatol as she drove to the hoop and converted on a layup.
Facing a 10-6 deficit
Natalie Brown drained the first three ball of the night for Simpson to make it a one-point game.
A bucket in the paint by
Tessa Kinney tied the game at 15 before the Simpson defense forced a Warrior turnover on a shot clock violation.
The Red Hawks answered a Warrior three-ball as Dumatol converted on her first three-pointer of the night to tie the game late in the first quarter.
Kinney working in the paint, scored the final points of the first quarter to give Simpson the 20-18 lead.
The Warriors tied the game at 20 before
Cerina Nguyen hit a mid-range jumper to put Simpson back in front 22-20.
Anna Marshall scored the next two buckets while Nguyen added another bucket to give Simpson the 28-26 advantage midway through the second quarter.
However, the Warriors came roaring back as they went on a 16-4 run to take the 42-32 lead into the half.
Corban opened the second half with a bucket to extend its lead to 12 points.
But the Red Hawks caught fire as
Natalie Brown came up huge as she nailed two three-pointers and a layup to pull Simpson within seven, 47-40.
Nguyen added a three-pointer and a layup to pull Simpson within four, 49-45.
The Red Hawks tied the game late in the third quarter as Marshall went 1-2 from the line and later took the one-point advantage on a jumper by Marshall.
The Red Hawks entered the fourth quarter tied at 57 and took the two-point lead on a layup in the paint by Nguyen midway through the fourth quarter.
But the Warriors went on a 15-4 run to take the game, 77-68.
Anna Marshall had herself a night as she had a team-high 21 points to go along with six steals.
Cerina Nguyen,
Natalie Brown, and
Tessa Kinney combined for a solid game as they dominated the boards with 27 rebounds to go along with 39 points.
Zata Dumatol rounded out the Simpson offense as she added eight points to go along with two rebounds and two steals.
Simpson looks to continue the Corban Classic tomorrow as they take on Northwest University at 5 pm.
