EUGENE, Ore. - The men's team kicked off the Dave Lipp classic this afternoon by defeating Corban University 66-59.
Drey Ubas owned the first points of the night on a mid-range jumper before hitting a three-pointer to give Simpson the early lead.
Derek Gorden had the hot hand as he scored eight straight points on back-to-back three-pointers to extend Simpson's lead to 11, 13-2.
The Warriors came back and took the lead before a layup by
Trey Conrad tied the game and a jumper by Gorden gave Simpson the lead back.
A crucial foul by the Warriors to end the half allowed Ubas to convert on three free throws to give Simpson the 34-32 lead going into the half.
A three-pointer by
Mack Tarver Jr. put Simpson on the board in the second half.
But the Warriors grew its largest lead of the game to nine points midway through the second half.
Simpson chipped away and retook the lead with just under six minutes as Conrad nailed a three-pointer to give Simpson the 58-57 lead.
The Simpson defense locked down the Warriors late in the second half as they held the Corban offense to just two points over the last five minutes of play.
The Red Hawks took the 66-59 victory to open the Dave Lipp Classic.

Derek Gorden had a night as he posted a double-double with a team-high 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Trey Conrad played an integral role off the bench as he followed close behind with 16 points while shooting 71% from the floor.
The Red Hawks look to sweep the classic tomorrow as they take on Bushnell University at 3 PM.
