Simpson locks up a playoff spot, sweeps Sea Beggars in straight sets

REDDING, Calif. - The women's volleyball squad holds sole possession of second place in the Cal Pac standings and has punched its playoff ticket after tonight's straight-set victory over Providence Christian. 

The Red Hawks came into the night winning four out of its last five games. 

The Sea Beggars drew first blood before the Red Hawks took its first lead of the game, 5-4 on kills by Katie Graham and Mariah Napoleon

Providence Christian took the 14-13 advantage before Simpson reeled off seven straight points to take the commanding 20-14 lead.

Madison Kammuller notched two aces, Graham had two kills, and Tiara Manns picked up one kill to force a PCC timeout. 

The Red Hawks closed out the first set on a 5-2 run with Manns slamming down the set-clinching point. 

But the Sea Beggars grabbed the early 6-4 lead before Simpson scored six unanswered points to take the 10-6 lead. 

Swenson recorded one kill while Napoleon notched two kills and a block assist with Dani Rydjord

The Red Hawks never looked back as they scored nine straight points to take the commanding 19-8 lead. 

Napoleon notched three aces and Manns, Rydjord, and Mallory Swenson combined for five kills. 



Manns finished off the second set 25-15 convincing victory with a kill to take the 2-0 match lead. 

Simpson looked to close the door in set three as they grabbed the early 7-3 lead as Mackenzie Tataryn picked up an ace, Swenson and Kare Ann Oshiro notched a kill, and Manns registered two kills and a solo block. 

The Red Hawks held total control of the third set as they never relinquished the lead. 

Swenson had the final swing of the night to put away the Sea Beggars and punch its playoff tickets. 

Mallory Swenson and Tiara Manns had huge nights as they each notched 11 kills a piece. Manns had a solid .292 hitting percentage while Swenson had a stellar .333 hitting percentage. 

Mariah Napoleon followed close behind with nine kills to go along with a tremendous .643 hitting percentage. 

Abigail Shackelford played an integral role as she notched 19 assists, one ace, and 16 digs. 

Madison Kammuller had a solid night on defense as she picked up 16 digs to go along with two aces. 

With the win, Simpson punches its first playoff ticket under Head Coach Mike Haworth and its first playoff appearance in over a decade. 

The Red Hawks look to catch UC Merced as they are 1.5 games up for the top spot as they take on Westcliff tomorrow at 7 pm.
