RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The women's volleyball squad continued its SoCal road trip today as they took on La Sierra University.
The Red Hawks are coming off an impressive straight-set victory over Westcliff last night as they look to claim the top spot in the Cal Pac standings.
The Golden Eagles drew first blood before a tandem block by
Mallory Swenson and
Katie Graham got Simpson on the board.
Facing a one-point deficit, the Red Hawks reeled off five straight points to take the 13-9 lead on a block by Graham and Napoleon, an ace by
Kiahla Granger, and kills by
Tiara Manns and
Abigail Shackelford.
Simpson did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the set as Manns slammed down the final kill to take the 25-22 first-set victory.
Set two followed a back-and-forth battle as both teams exchanged rallies in a set that went beyond the standard 25-point mark.
Simpson faced the early 7-5 deficit before scoring six unanswered points on three kills by Manns and a kill by Swenson to take the 11-7 lead.
The Golden Eagles held the 23-21 lead before a kill by Swenson and Graham tied the game at 23.
With its backs against the wall, La Sierra moved into set point territory before three straight points on kills by Shackelford and Manns flipped the script.
A duo block from Shackelford and Graham capped off the second set thriller that saw the Red Hawks take the commanding 2-0 match lead.
But the Golden Eagles fought and scratched its way back into the game as they took set three convincingly 25-14.
Simpson looked to bounce back in set four as they took the commanding 11-5 lead after scoring eight straight points on three kills by Manns, a kill by Swenosn, and three aces by Shackelford.
However, the Golden Eagles went on an 11-2 run to take the 16-13 lead and never looked back as they took set four 25-23 to even the score and push the match into a fifth set.
An ace by
Madison Kammuller allowed Simpson to take the early lead in the fifth and final set.
Simpson took control of the fifth set on a 6-1 run to take the 11-6 lead.
The five-point lead proved to be enough for Simpson as a kill by Graham ended the five-set thriller.
Tiara Manns had a monster game as she had a season-high 20 kills to go along with a .311 hitting percentage.
Katie Graham had another big game in the net as she notched 15 kills to go along with a team-high six total blocks.
Mallory Swenson followed close behind with 13 kills to go along with two total blocks.
Mackenzie Tataryn and
Abigail Shackelford played a big part in Simpson's hitters as they combined for 48 assists, five aces, and 18 digs.
Madison Kammuller had another solid game on defense as she notched 23 digs.
With the win, Simpson takes the season series against La Sierra and is now only 0.5 game behind UC Merced and Providence Christian for the top spot in the Cal Pac standings.
Simpson has been on fire as they now move one game over .500 overall and are winners of nine of the last 12 games.
The Red Hawks conclude its road trip tomorrow in a huge matchup against Providence Christian at 6 pm.
