Red Hawks Draw with Yotes in Home Opener

Box Score REDDING, Calif. - The 2023 men's soccer home opener came against Cascade Conference rival, The College of Idaho. The Red Hawks and Yotes took part in a Sunday matinee matchup at 10 AM. The grueling Redding heat fueled the fire for a fierce and physical matchup between the two teams. The matchup consisted of seven yellow cards and 21 fouls.

The Yotes drew first blood in the 8th minute of play as the goal went past the save attempt by goalie Daniel Morales. The Red Hawks outshot the Yotes in the first half, 9-6 but were unable to find the back of the net.

However, Simpson took off in the second half as its attackers found the back of the net twice. Michel Hampe put Simpson on the board in the 48th minute when he converted on a penalty kick that was aided by a Yotes yellow card.

The Yotes struck back in the 80th minute when a College of Idaho corner kick bounced around the box before being put away in the back of the net. But just five minutes later Stefano Stabel scored the equalizer on a Simpson corner kick by Alvaro Zarpellon that deflected off a Yotes defender.

The Red Hawks showed true grit as they rallied from behind twice. Goalkeeper Daniel Morales was given the tie on the day as he registered six saves. None bigger than the save he recorded in the 79th minute as he denied a would-be Yotes goal on a sensational diving save.

A look ahead:

The Red Hawks will be in search of their first win of the year as they take on the 3-1 Warriors. The Warriors are coming off its first loss of the season against Cal Pac rival UC Merced while the Red Hawks are riding high off a momentous second half against the College of Idaho.

Before the loss against UC Merced, the Warriors were a perfect 3-0 while allowing just one goal. The Red Hawks are hoping to get back leading scorer, Jesus Rodriguez as he battles a fractured cheek.

The Red Hawks will hit the road down to Rockin, CA to face GSAC rival, William Jessup University on Wednesday, August 29th at 1:30 PM.
