REDDING, Calif. - Simpson U softball entered into last week's four-game series riding a 12-game winning streak and were looking to extend it as they hosted Westcliff University.
They did just that in game one by beating Westcliff, 8-4 on the back of an impressive pitching performance from
Sunshine Wehunt who held the Warriors to two earned runs despite allowing 17 hits. The Red Hawk starter got some help from the Simpson offense, striking for eight runs including a four-run 4th inning.
In game two, the Warriors battled, knocking in 11 runs and taking down the Red Hawks 11-6 and snapping Simpson's 13-game winning streak.
Despite the win streak ending, the Red Hawks got their groove back instantly in games three and four, beating Westcliff 5-4 and 3-2 to take the four-game series at home.
Game three was tied 3-3 through seven and the Warriors were able to score once in the top half, but Simpson in the bottom half scored twice on a walk-off two-RBI single off the bat of
Meridian Enriquez to score Garner and Zamora.
Game four was the lowest scoring game of the series and again
Sunshine Wehunt hunted down the Warrior batters allowing just two runs on four hits.
Madison Greco got the Red Hawks on the board with an RBI triple in the 3rd inning that scored Rizzardo. Simpson scored twice more in the 5th inning, once on a wild pitch, and once on a sacrifice fly on what would prove to be enough for the Red Hawks to pull off the victory.
With the series victory, Simpson remains red-hot and has jumped up the standings into 3rd place just one conference series remaining. SU will face UAV in a four-game series in Lancaster beginning on Saturday, April 30th.
