PASADENA, Calif. – Simpson University baseball picked up the series opening win over Providence Christian College on the road, 9-2.
In game one of the three game series,
Cody Coggins stood tall on the bump, only allowing one run in six innings, while striking out seven Sea Beggar batters on his way to recording his second win of the year.
The Red Hawks lineup provided a nice nine run spark in the win, including a six-run 8
th inning that was the nail in the coffin. Simpson manufactured a run in the top of the 1
st inning after
Austen Salcedo singled and he would eventually come around to score. After Providence tied the game with a homerun in the 2
nd, neither team would avoid a zero until the 6
th.
Derick Kuhn drove in both
Damien Chavez and
Creed Smith to give the Red Hawks a 3-1 lead.
The offensive onslaught began in the 8
th inning as the Red Hawks tallied three hits and benefitted from two Providence errors in bring six runs across.
Numerous impressive performances in the series opener to go along with Coggins excellent start, including three solid innings in relief from
Dylan Lum and
Walker Frayne.
Derick Kuhn finished 2-4 with 3 RBIs as
Jordan Taylor brought two runners home and
Damien Chavez was 1-3 with a run batted in and two runs scored.
This win is Simpson's first in conference play and is on the march to get to .500 and into the Cal Pac Championship tournament.
The Red Hawks will finish the series with Providence Christian on March 9
th at 11 am.
